The Wines

We are delighted to announce that 2006 was indeed a model vintage at Alder Springs Vineyard, boasting ideal harvest conditions that yielded some of its finest fruit ever. A long and even ripening season with no heat spikes or harvest rain produced physiologically ripe fruit at moderate alcohol levels with good concentration. The result,
20 months later, was the easy birth of four beautiful new wines.

2006 combined the best traits of Violet-Green’s previous vintages exhibiting the intense fruit and deep concentration of the 2003 wines, the powerhouse structure of 2004, and the elegant balance of the 2005 vintage. All attempts to define these wines find us returning always to the same words: unctuous, complex, and amazingly balanced.

The paragon of unctuosity, our 2006 Syrah offers a seductive blend of Alder Springs’ prime blocks. We both agree that this 100% blockbuster Syrah ranks among our strongest efforts to date. Big, rich, and layered with intense fruit, this wine is an expression of what pure Alder Springs Syrah is all about. We are also pleased to report that its vineyard sibling, the 2006 Syrah~ The Bowl, (previewed in our 2008 Holiday Offer) has developed a good backbone of dense rich dark fruit with structure to match. Balance and penetrating focus characterize both of these Syrahs.

Our 2006 Cabernet Franc sings a mysterious song of deep Bordeaux aromas and flavors wrapped around an irresistible core of blueberry and violets. In fact, we found this wine difficult to put down after each tasting session! Even at a very young age, this delicious siren is enjoyable today with the promise of excellent aging potential. The pleasure continues with the 2006 UltraViolet claret. This year’s blend is a complex fusion of four Bordeaux varietals--including 11% Petit Verdot—that comprises our dark-fruit flagship proprietary red. The result is a rich explosion of concentrated wild blackberry, blueberry, and raspberry flavors that will at once delight and befuddle your friends at the next blind tasting.

2006 UltraViolet (Claret)
Alder Springs Vineyard
Graphite, mint, and deep Cabernet fruit aromas preview a swirl of currants, black fruit, and blueberry flavors wrapped around a core of deep black cherry. Dusty mint and chocolate drive the lengthy finale. This wine exhibits a lush texture with good length and persistence backed by firm tannins that promise excellent aging potential. Decant in its first year to enjoy now to 2017.

2006 Cabernet Franc
Alder Springs Vineyard
Aromas of roses, vanilla, crushed violets, and sandalwood introduce multiple layers of flowers, vanilla, black cherries, charcoal around a deep blueberry-cassis core. A long finish of licorice, chocolate and fine tannins round out this lovely Bordeaux-style wine. Decant in its first year to enjoy today to 2016.

This wine offers aromas of black pepper, tar, dark berry, and eucalyptus that yield to a long palate of concentrated blackberry, blueberry and licorice cloaked in a finish of mint chocolate and vanilla. Structured for longevity, this unctuous concentration of pure Syrah fruit delivers a deep and complex drinking experience that satisfies now and over the next 8-10 years.
